Our 6th-8th Grades Program

Days at NEOC are designed to support the curiosity Middle School-age campers have and the independence and social connection they crave. Activities encourage them to take risks, enjoy practicing and mastering concepts and skills, and explore trust. All of this is within a framework that supports and builds self-awareness and self-confidence. Small group sizes ensure that counselors will know each camper in a personalized way!

Middle School campers will be given opportunities to be leaders in our community and mentor fellow campers of all ages.

All age groups at NEOC are named after animals. As our oldest age group, Middle School campers are referred to as wolves. Their home base on campus is called their lair!

No matter how many weeks a Middle School camper chooses to spend at NEOC, our team is eager to help them foster a love of the great outdoors and the joy of a summer camp tradition!

Activities

Camp days are divided into six activity periods, plus lunchtime. Middle School campers have core activities that they do through the week, like archery, art, canoeing, conservation, field games, orienteering, outdoor survival skills, and trail walks. They opt into several elective activities each day, that change through the week.

Examples of elective activities are:

  • Animal identification, habitats, and tracking
  • Archery
  • Arts and crafts
  • Art journaling
  • Botany
  • Canoeing
  • Conservation
  • Cooking
  • Dance
  • Field games
  • Field sports
  • Gardening
  • Hiking
  • Journaling
  • Meditation
  • Music
  • Orienteering
  • Outdoor survival skills
  • Science
  • Theater
  • Water games
  • Yoga
  • Zoology

Structure of a Week

Each week begins with the whole camp gathering for introductions to the counselors and a reveal of the week's theme. Then, age-divided groups head-out to create their headquarters for the week, set group expectations, and get to know one another.

Each day ends with group time where campers have an opportunity to reflect on their day and prioritize the elective activities offered the next day.

Every Thursday is a theme day, with a new theme each week! Some Thursdays will offer the opportunity to dress thematically. Every Thursday will include twists on familiar activities and special, one-time activities or games.

Camp ends each week with a camp-wide campfire that includes singing, skits, and more!

He had a tough first day, but when I called to talk about it with the staff, everyone was so responsive and helpful. His next day was so much better and just kept getting better from there. By Friday, he was rating it 4.5 out of 5 stars and saying he’d come back next year!" H.L., Natick
I love the positive feedback my sons receive from their counselors on their way to the car after camp. It means a lot to my oldest, who is very hard on himself. I can't believe the team keeps the fun going outside all day. It's so great for my boys to be away from screens! Archery is a big favorite ... Show full review I love the positive feedback my sons receive from their counselors on their way to the car after camp. Archery is a big favorite for both of them. They come home so tired, in a good way!" S.C., Sudbury
