3 - 5 Years Old

We affectionately call our youngest campers Ducklings. Their days at NEOC are designed to support their social, emotional, and physical growth, within a safe and supportive framework that encourages their comfort in exploring the natural world, an active lifestyle, and making friends. The camp program includes familiar activities, such as arts & crafts, story time, and nature walks, to help them practice and master skills. New activities, like suction cup archery, shelter exploration, and gardening, encourage them to develop trust, make new discoveries about themselves, and build confidence!

Our thoughtful balance of consistency and variety makes a single camp week approachable and fun, while multiple weeks feel new and exciting each week! No matter how many weeks a young camper chooses to spend at NEOC, our team is eager to help them foster a love of the great outdoors and the joy of a summer camp tradition.

Our 1-to-5 staff-to-camper ratio ensures the personalized attention that each Duckling deserves. Duckling groups are limited to 10 campers.

Activities

Camp days are divided into five activity periods, plus lunchtime.

Duckings spend their three morning activity periods completely outside and actively exploring nature. They spend one of their two afternoon periods doing a quiet activity in a cool, indoor location.

Examples of our activities are:

  • Arts & crafts
  • Circle games
  • Fairy house hunts
  • Field games
  • Garden exploration with specialists from Massachusetts Horticultural Society
  • Gardening
  • Mud kitchen play
  • Music
  • Parachute-based fun
  • Sandbox play
  • Storytime
  • Suction-cup archery
  • Trail walks
  • Treasure hunts
  • Water games

Structure of a Week

Ducklings arrive at NEOC and immediately meet their counselors. Their week begins with very familiar activities that help them settle into camp with comfort and security, while beginning to make friends with the other campers in their group and meeting of all the counselors on campus.

Every morning, with their counselors and group, they attend a whole camp gathering where they join in call and repeat songs and hear about the day ahead!

Each day ends with campers having an opportunity to share their favorite part of the day and what they are most excited about for the next day.

Every Thursday is a unique theme day, which is revealed with great excitement on Thursday morning! The day is a wonderful chance for our youngest campers to exercise their imagination and enjoy twists on familiar activities.

Camp ends each week with s'mores!

Potty Training Requirements

All campers must be able to independently use the bathroom while at camp. This includes:
  • The ability to communicate to their counselors that they need to go to the bathroom before they are about to have an accident
  • Postpone going if they must wait for another camper who is using the bathroom
  • Pull up/down their clothes without assistance
  • Get on/off the toilet by themself (step-stools are available by the toilets to help campers get up to and down from them)
  • Wipe and clean themselves after using the toilet
  • Wash and dry their own hands (step-stools are available by the sinks to help campers access them)

Campers are to be dressed for camp in clothing that they can easily change in/out of independently.

Campers are not permitted to wear diapers or pull-ups at camp, even as a preventative measure.

We realize that accidents may occur. For this reason, we recommend that all campers bring to camp a full change of clothes, including underwear and socks, in a Ziploc bag that is labeled with their name. Parents will be notified by telephone by a NEOC staff member if an accident does occur.

NEOC reserves the right to cancel the registration of any participant who has repeated bathroom accidents at camp. After three accidents within a one-week period, a child will be asked to take a break from camp for the remainder of the week. Upon returning to camp, and if appropriate, the child may be reduced to a half-day schedule. After three more accidents, the child will need to take a break for the rest of the summer and we will then apply 100% of their unused tuition paid as a NEOC credit on the family account in the hopes that they will be ready next year. This credit will never expire and can be used by any child in the family for future camps. These policies are in place to ensure a safe and sanitary environment for all.

Thank you for the option to indicate friends he wanted to be grouped with — having a familiar face with him was a tremendous help. The Family Dashboard and communication ahead of the session were both so helpful. We also loved seeing pictures of the day! He really loved the full day and variety of activities, but his favorites were mornings as a full group in the Witch’s Hat, checking to see what badges he earned the prior day, and exploring the trails and pond. He also loved trying new things he had never been exposed to like archery and canoeing. The counselors’ energy and enthusiasm created such a positive environment for exploration and fun." Our son had a blast at NEOC! He felt so supported by his counselors, was proud of himself for every badge he received, and came home happy, filthy, and exhausted every day - I genuinely don't know what else we could have possibly hoped for in a camp!"
